Paragon Library: What To Say When You Talk To Yourself by Shad Helmstetter

We recommended this book, “What To Say When You Talk To Yourself” by Shad Helmstetter last year. I want to say after finishing this book, there was a lot to take away from it.

As it says early in the book, “…your success or failure in anything, large or small, will depend on your programming-what you accept from others, and what you say when you talk to yourself.” When you were little, you were often told even in a positive household “no” 148,000 times. That’s a lot! So, you may need to reprogram “yes!” back into your brain!

Negative self-talk seems to be all around us, and it often occurs when we make a mistake or something bad comes up in the day. Examples of this are below (don’t study them, you don’t want them!)

I am always late.
I can never seem to get this right. That’s just my luck.
Patients always cancel last minute.
My team never listens.
I hate technology. Technology hates me.
Just another expense to add to the list.
I will never get out of debt.
No matter what I do I just can’t seem to lose weight. I’m really out of shape.
I don’t have time to do anything I like.
I can’t remember names.
It’s just going to be one of those days.

However, we should take note of the things that we think that our negative for most are unconscious thoughts. In order to change our behaviors, habits, we must rewire our brain enough that it does so unconsciously such as:

I am never late. I always allow myself plenty of time to get where I need to be. I am always early and on time.
>I am always able to find the solution to the problem. I am a problem solver in all aspects of my life.
My team always listens to me and are always pushing for growth of themselves and our practice. I am always able to learn technology. We have a great company culture, and it starts with me!
This expense will easily blow my sales out of the water. We can’t complain at the growth this year!
I am on my way to be debt free. Wooohoo!
>>>>>>>>>>>>I eat only those things that benefit me and my body. I work out because a healthier me is better as a dentist, a spouse and a friend.
>I have plenty of time to accomplish all that I need and want to do (with extra time).
>I remember those names that I would like to remember. I do it easily.
This day is going to be the best day this year.

Sometimes this is easier than it looks, so not only should you start with reading the entire book- which if you don’t have time, you can get the audio version on Libby (the library app) or Hoopla (another library app) or buy on audible. Lastly, we recommend: one that you try out the 30 days free of https://www.selftalkplus.com and then two you create a recording of your own self talk to listen too.
