Start Your Morning with Kindness

Madrugada is when the night meets the dawn.

In the busyness of our schedule, the morning hours really have an impact on our day. As such, it’s important to start your day off right in your thoughts, words, and actions. I call it the “Law of Attraction”. Because I didn’t grow up in a wealthy family, I always had a chip on my shoulder about earning my own way in life. The chip remained even as I found success.

“No one gave me anything,” I would declare.

“I’ve worked hard for everything I have in life.” No one gave me anything and I assumed that’s how the rest of my life would be. My wife, Kay, consistently prodded me to change my thinking and my words. Start saying “people always give me things,” she would say. But it just seemed like a positive self-talk thing, and it was a lie. Early one morning I ordered my small coffee at a drive-thru coffee shop. The girl took my coffee order and asked…

“What kind of donut would you like?”

“Just the coffee, please. I don’t need a donut, “I replied.

“If you could have a donut, what kind would you like?” she continued.

“Plain.” I assumed she was taking a survey or something. I pulled forward to the drive-thru window to find her waiting with a big smile.

“I’m going to give you an old-fashioned donut because every day I get to give away one donut to my favorite customer,” she said smiling.

“I’m your favorite customer?” I asked, wondering if there was a catch.

“Yes, you’re my favorite customer.”

“But no one ever gives me anything,” I protested.

“That’s probably not true, and, you shouldn’t tell anyone that anyway.” She said as she put another donut in my bag. Two donuts! I gave her a $5 bill, fully expecting to be charged for my coffee and the two donuts. She handed me my change, only charging me for the small coffee.

“Enjoy the donuts.” “Really…no one ever gives me anything,” I protested again. “Well, I guess you can’t say that anymore,” she laughed.
